Services

I offer a range of services in addition to making new instruments. If you require any work done on your violin, viola or cello, make an appointment at which you will receive a free, no obligation assessment. For more extensive repairs and restorations, I am happy to recommend colleagues specialising in this work.

I have a particular interest in improving small, student grade instruments. A child learning the violin, viola or cello is more likely to enjoy it, and therefore make progress, if their instrument is comfortable to play. Many cheaper instruments are badly set up, with stings at the wrong height and pegs that are too stiff. Many luthiers consider working on such instruments uneconomical. I see it as an investment in the future. A child who enjoys learning the violin, viola, or cello, even on a cheap, factory made instrument, may eventually want a fine, handmade instrument, and, even if they don't, they deserve to enjoy playing the instrument they have now.

Parents may be understandably reluctant to invest in improving or repairing a child's instrument for which they did not pay much in the first place. However, the cost of an instrument, and the cost of making it comfortable to play, are just a small proportion of what parents invest in their child learning to play, when the cost of lessons is taken into consideration. A little extra money spent on improving a child's instrument will be more than repaid in their greater enjoyment and quicker progress.
